How to get healthcare advice and assistance when the practice is closed

Out-of-hours services are available when the practice is closed during the hours of 6pm to 8.30am Monday to Friday, and during  Bank Holidays and Weekends.

what to do when the GP practice is closed:

-if you need medical help fast but it is not an emergency call 111

-if it is a life threatening emergency call 999

Calls to 111 are free from landlines and mobiles

NHS 111 is available 24/7 every day of the year

8.30am until 6.00pm – Mondays and Fridays
7.30am until 8.00pm – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
We close for 1 hour at 12.30pm on Thursdays to allow for staff training.
(Telephone lines switched to the out-of-hours service at 6.00pm daily.)

Shieldfield Surgery
8.45am until 5.15pm – Monday to Friday
We close each day for 1 hour at 12.30pm.

You may obtain a repeat prescription for your medication (provided your doctor has authorised it) by telephoning us on 0191 275 5742.

Repeat prescriptions requests can be made by telephone, in writing or by calling at the surgery. This telephone will only be answered between 11.00am and 5.00pm each day.

We are unable to take orders or issue prescriptions at weekends, public holidays or out of normal surgery hours. Stamped addressed envelopes can be left with the surgery so that your new prescription can be sent to you.

You can also arrange for a chemist of your choice to collect your prescription. Your prescription will be ready after 4.00pm on the next working day following your request.
